Do you think Nuclear power is the Future? Nuclear power is the use of nuclear reactions to produce electricity. Enrico Fermi, an Italian physicist, led the team of scientists who created the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. Nuclear power can be obtained from nuclear fission, nuclear decay, and nuclear fusion reactions. Presently, the vast majority of electricity from nuclear power is produced by nuclear fission of uranium and plutonium in nuclear power plants. Nuclear plants are the most efficient source of electricity, operating 24/7 at a 93 percent average capacity factor. Nuclear energy produces electricity that can be used to power homes, schools, businesses, and hospitals. nuclear energy is considered one of the most environmentally friendly sources of energy as it produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions during the production of electricity as compared to traditional sources like coal power plants. A major environmental concern related to nuclear power is the creation of radioactive wastes such as uranium mill tailings, spent (used) reactor fuel, and other radioactive wastes. These materials can remain radioactive and dangerous to human health for thousands of years.
