Atom is the smallest part or the basic unit of an element which has nucleus made of protons and neutrons and with electrons in orbits. The process of fission is splitting up of heavy nucleus of an atom to two lighter nuclei when a neutron hits an atom. A huge amount of energy is released during this process and is converted into electrical energy in nuclear power plants. The emission of neutrons is regulated inside the reactors for a controlled chain reaction to take place. In any case, if the nuclear reaction undergoes an uncontrollable rate, this can lead to high destruction. Sometimes, the process can occur without the bombardment of neutron, which is spontaneous fission, a type of radioactive decay that is unstable nucleus becomes stable by losing energy.
