Sir Isaac Newton is a well-known scientist. He is well-known for inventing a number of scientific hypotheses in the fields of mathematics and physics. But have you heard of Newtonian fluid? Newton detailed how ‘normal' liquids or fluids behave, noting that their viscosity is constant (flow). This means that their viscosity or flow behaviour is only affected by changes in temperature or pressure. Water, for example, freezes and becomes a solid at 0°C and then becomes a gas at 100°C. Water acts like a ‘normal' liquid with constant viscosity within this temperature range. When force is applied to Newtonian liquids, such as water, their viscosity does not change. When force is applied to non-Newtonian fluids like ketchup, their viscosity changes. Pump efficiency at the specified duty point is critical for gentle product handling. The ratio between the amount of fluid that enters the pump and the amount that exits is used to determine its efficiency. When your product's efficiency is low, it stays in the casing and recalculates, causing over handling and viscosity variations. If the variations in viscosity become permanent as a result of over handling, the product's integrity is jeopardized.
