A branch of electronics in which molecules are engineered and arranged so that their electrical properties allow them to be used as individual, microscopic electrical components. Moletronics is the only solution to extend Moore's law beyond the limitations of conventional silicon integrated circuits. Molecular electronics aims at the use of molecules as the working components (wires, diodes, transistors, and logic and memory elements) of the future electronic devices. It is the use of molecules as the primary building block for electronic circuitry. A molecular approach, it is hoped, will enable the construction of much smaller circuits than is currently possible using the more conventional semiconductors such as silicon.
