There is a driving force behind the development and maintenance of each living thing. It is metabolism. All chemical changes during the growth of a microbe are meant for its health. This chemical change is called microbial metabolism. Microbes can metabolize a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds. It produces substances which are important for the existence of other living things. Heterotrophic bacteria metabolize sugar to produce energy through fermentation. Substrate level phosphorylation, electron transport phosphorylation and photo phosphorylation are the major components of microbial metabolism. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates are large nutrient molecules. They become smaller molecules with the help of enzymes. Please see the presentation for more details.
