With India’s growing population and rampant deforestation, it is most definitely not a good time to be a tiger even if the numbers have steadily continued to increase in the country. Double sampling method was introduced in 2006 after the “pugmark” surveys were found to be inaccurate. It was based on ground-based surveys and actual images captured on camera-traps. The forest guard records either seeing the animal or their signs – mass, faecal matter or dung. According to the All-India Tiger Estimation Results released last year, Madhya Pradesh had the highest number of 526 tigers. Distance sampling using line transects is one of the most frequently used methods to obtain estimates of population density and abundance for tiger prey species. India had achieved a historic growth in its tiger population by doubling the numbers four years before deadline. We still need to take care of for the sustained and majestic survival of our national animal.
