Measure words in linguistics are words that are used in conjunction with a numeral to indicate the quantity of a noun. They denote a unit or measurement and are used with noncountable nouns. In English, for example, mud is a mass noun, so one cannot say "three muds," but one can say "three drops of mud," "three pails of mud," and so on. Drops and pails serve as measure words in these examples. Informally, the term measure word can also refer to numeral classifiers, which are used with countable nouns in some languages.
