The Indian legal system has in place various laws under Family Law to sanction marriages in our country. These laws are mostly formulated keeping in mind the religious plurality of our people. In this presentation, we bring to you, a historical perspective of the various kinds of marriages sanctioned in the Hindu scriptures and the Hindu ceremonies that have to be practiced and provided proof of for a Hindu marriage to be considered legal in the eyes of the law. The aim of this presentation is to make people aware of all the rituals that have to be carried out to ensure that a marriage is legally accepted. The next few parts of this series explain the various rituals for other religious communities that need to be conducted for a marriage to be considered legal.
