The parasite Plasmodium is what causes malaria. It cannot be passed from person to person and is only spread by the bite of an Anopheles mosquito carrying the infection. The type of plasmodium parasite detected in the blood affects how severe the sickness is. There are numerous plasmodium species, but only five of them can result in malaria. The PPT presents a thorough study of the whats and hows of the disease with a focus on what "malaria" actually means.
