Indians were united in their attempt to free their land from foreign rule. They worked hand-in-hand to ensure that India won its independence and was free of British rule. However, once independence was achieved, there were other issues that cropped up and people were then divided on the basis of language and regional affiliations. Many new states were formed by carving out or splitting up former larger political entities. Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, both of which were earlier known together as the Madras Presidency, were formed because of this very reason.
