Satellite communication have mainly two types of power calculations. One is transmitting power and the other is receiving power calculations. Commonly they are given a term called as link budget calculations. Here, unit of power is taken as decibel (dB). These calculations are very important while designing a communication system. It is to make sure that the system is capable of operations in its expected distance and power levels. Link budget is keeping an account of all the power gains and losses of a communication signal. The equation can be simply given as: received power equal to the sum of transmitted power and gains from which the losses are subtracted. This is designed while building a system, to find the received power and to ensure that the information is received with a signal to noise ratio formation. Also known as one-way link equation to differentiate from radar signals. More information about the topic is available in the presentation slides.
