It is not an exaggeration to say that one would not find many Telugu people who are not familiar with the name ‘Ghantasala’. At a time when heroes were worshiped as the gods they portrayed on screen, at a time when no effort was spared to find the best talents in all fields related to movies like cinematography, editing, and so on, Ghantasala was introduced to Telugu cinema. It was in those days that he blessed the Telugu cinema with his lovely voice and extraordinary music in movies including Patala Bhairavi, Mayabazaar, Lava Kusa, Pandava Vanavaasam, Gundamma Katha and so on. He not only sang but also acted in a song from the 1960 film 'Sri Venkateswara Mahatmyam' that was shot inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Tirumala temple. This was the first and last time a film unit was allowed so close to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. It might come as a surprise to many to know that Ghantasala began his career in the cinema field not as a singer but as a music director. He is credited with the introduction of the method of changing the tone of the song to suit the actor. Ghantasala was also acclaimed and considered unparalleled for his style of reciting poetry.
