The telugu writer Gurajada Apparao Garu is most known for his social novel 'Kanya Sulkam'. Born in 1862 in the Visakhapatnam District, he was one of the first writers to have written in popular spoken Telugu as against the rigid 'Graandhikam'; colloqual language in literature was yet to gain popularity and acceptance in those days. This was a novel that created a sensation among the Telugu people for it opposed the cruel practice of getting young girls married off to old men, for a brideprice.
