Lights are frequently mounted to the gauge glass, making this type very helpful in regions with limited lighting. The operation is founded on the idea that as light passes through various media, its bending, or refraction, will be varied. In water, light bends or refracted to a higher extent than in steam. The light rays run rather straight in the portion of the chamber that contains steam, and the red lens is lighted. The light rays are bent in the water-filled portion of the chamber, allowing the green lens to be lighted. A direct reading liquid level mechanism is the ball float method.
