Did you know that there are Disabilities in Learning? Learning disabilities are disorders that affect the ability to understand or use spoken or written language, do mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, or direct attention. Learning disabilities are due to genetic and/or neurobiological factors that alter brain functioning in a manner that affects one or more cognitive processes related to learning. Learning disabilities should not be confused with learning problems that are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor handicaps; intellectual disability; emotional disturbance; or environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantages. Learning disabilities are referred to as “hidden disabilities” because people with learning disabilities are of average or above-average intelligence. There often appears to be a gap between the individual’s potential and actual achievement. Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities, Oral / Written Language Disorder, and Specific Reading Comprehension Deficit are some of the specific Learning Disabilities.
