Learning is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviours, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. The ability to learn is possessed by humans, animals, and some machines; there is also evidence for some kind of learning in certain plants. Psychologists often define learning as a relatively permanent change in behaviour as a result of experience. The psychology of learning focuses on a range of topics related to how people learn and interact with their environments. Learning is “a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential for improved performance and future learning”. The change in the learner may happen at the level of knowledge, attitude or behaviour. ‘Learning to learn’ is the ability to pursue and persist in learning, to organise one’s own learning, including through effective management of time and information, both individually and in groups.
