The word stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission and Radiation. It is a device that is used to amplify or increase the intensity of light by generating the same. The light is produced by Stimulated emission of radiation. In 1960, first laser was built by Theodore. Lasers are distinguished from other light sources by their coherence, monochromatic nature, high directional and focused. An atom in lower energy level absorbs photon and move towards excited state. When excitation occurs, there is an unstable state where it cannot stay. Hence the electron comes back to the lower state by emitting photon whose energy is equivalent to the energy difference between two levels. This is spontaneous emission, principle of laser. Three basic components of a laser include lasing material, pump source and optical cavity. Types include solid state laser, gas laser and metal vapour laser. Used in surgery, welding, cutting and blasting, IT field and scientific research. More information on Lasers can be obtained from powerpoint presentation.
