"Malayalam Folk Songs Malayalam folk songs evolved overtime. The identities of the poets are not known and sometimes was a collective effort. Lullabies, farm songs, Onam songs, war songs are all now considered as folk songs. These songs have beautiful rhythms that can be sung carefree and are often very short, though there are some songs that give meticulous attention to many nuances and go on to be even an hour long. The folk song “Kunjunnalil cherupathilalledi, enthe kunjeli nine njan kandathalledi. Ninte achanulloru kalathilalledi, enthe kunjeli nine njan kandathalledi....” was sung by Kalabhavan Mani. Kalabhavan Mani belongs to the genre of artists who along with folk lyricists like Arumughan Venkitangu introduced folk songs to mainstream music. They succeeded to the extent of even becoming popular film songs sought after by new generation music buffs. Kalabhavan Mani’s earned attention and applause by being able to retain the authentic tunes and rhythms of old and forgotten folks songs."
