Kunjali marakkar were considered to be the first naval defence of Indian coast. They were so efficient that their war against Portugese prevented their invasion from the year 1520 to 1600. The name "Marakkar" was provided by Zamorin, the King of Kozhikode. Four Kunjali Marakkars were there, out of which, Marakkar IV was reffered to as the 'greatest corsair ever seen'. Kunjali Marakkar was killed when Zamorin joined hands with the Portugese.
ഇന്ത്യൻ തീരത്തെ ആദ്യത്തെ നാവിക പ്രതിരോധമായി കുഞ്ഞാലി മരക്കാർ കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. 1520 മുതൽ 1600 വരെ പോർച്ചുഗീസിനെതിരായ അവരുടെ യുദ്ധം അവരുടെ അധിനിവേശത്തെ തടഞ്ഞു. കോഴിക്കോട് രാജാവായിരുന്ന സാമൂതിരിയാണ് "മരക്കാർ" എന്ന പേര് നൽകിയത്. നാല് കുഞ്ഞാലി മരക്കാർ അവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, അതിൽ മരക്കാർ നാലാമനെ 'ഇതുവരെ കണ്ടിട്ടുള്ളതിൽ വച്ച് ഏറ്റവും വലിയ കോർസെയർ' എന്ന് പരാമർശിച്ചു. സാമൂതിരി പോർച്ചുഗീസുകാരുമായി കൈകോർത്തപ്പോൾ കുഞ്ഞാലി മരക്കാർ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു..
