N. Kumaran Asan, commonly known as Mahakavi. Kumaran Asan (the prefix Mahakavi granted by Madras University in 1922 means "great poet," and the suffix Asan indicates scholar or teacher) was one of Kerala, South India's tripartite poets. He was also a philosopher, social reformer, and Sree Narayana Guru's follower. In the first quarter of the twentieth century, Kumaran Asan began a revolution in Malayalam poetry, converting it from philosophical to lyrical. Asan's poetry demonstrates a strong moral and spiritual dedication. His works are an expressive witness to lyrical focus and dramatic context. He wrote the epic poem Buddha Charitha for which he got inspiration from Edwin Arnold’s Light of Asia. While in Duravastha, he revealed his revolutionary zeal for fighting caste distinctions; a few other poetic works had a distinct Hindu/Buddhist slant.
"കുമാരനാശാൻ തിരുവനന്തപുറത്തു ചിറയിൻകീഴ് താലൂക്കിൽ കായിക്കര എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് കുമാരനാശാൻ ജനിച്ചത്. കുമാരു എന്നായിരുന്നു യഥാർത്ഥ പേര് . ഈഴവ സമുദായത്തിൽ ജനിച്ചതുകൊണ്ട് അന്ന് നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന അനാചാരങ്ങളുടെ ദുഷ്‌ഫലങ്ങൾ കുറെയൊക്കെ കുമാരുവിനു അനുഭവിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു. ശ്രീ നാരായണഗുരുവുമായുള്ള കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച കുമാരനാശാന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ വഴിത്തിരിവായിരുന്നു. 1907 ൽ കുമാരനാശാൻ എഴുതിയ വീണപൂവ് എന്ന കാവ്യം മലയാള ഭാഷ സാഹിത്യത്തിലെ ഒരു നാഴികക്കല്ലാണ്."
