In the Sanskrit epic Ramayana, Kishkindha is the kingdom of Vanara King Sugriva, Vali's younger brother. Sugriva controlled this country with the help of his buddy Hanuman, according to Indian history. The region around the Tungabhadra river (formerly known as Pampa Sarovara) near Hampi in present-day Vijayanagara district, Karnataka, is thought to be the location of this kingdom. Sugriva resided with Hanuman during his exile on a mountain near the Rishimukha river, which bears the same name. The entire region was engulfed in the vast Dandaka Forest, which stretched from the Vindhya range to the South Indian peninsula during the Treta Yuga. As a result, this kingdom was known as the Vanaras'. According to the epic Mahabharata, the Pandava Sahadeva visited this country during his southern military campaign to collect tribute for Yudhishthira's Rajasuya sacrifice during the Dvapara Yuga.
