There are about 44 rivers in the state of Kerala, which can be classified into two westward flowing and eastward flowing. Only three rivers flow eastwards, they are Kabani, Bhavani and Pambar. The remaining 41 rivers originate from the Western Ghats and flow to the Arabian Sea or Backwaters. Kasaragod is the district of Kerala with a maximum of 12 westward flowing rivers. Periyar is the longest river which provides drinking water to several towns in the State.
കേരളത്തിൽ ഏകദേശം 44 നദികളുണ്ട്, അവയെ പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ടൊഴുകുന്നതും കിഴക്കോട്ടൊഴുകുന്നതും രണ്ടായി തരം തിരിക്കാം. കബനി, ഭവാനി, പാമ്പാർ എന്നീ മൂന്ന് നദികൾ മാത്രം കിഴക്കോട്ട് ഒഴുകുന്നു. ബാക്കിയുള്ള 41 നദികൾ പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഉത്ഭവിച്ച് അറബിക്കടലിലേക്കോ കായലിലേക്കോ ഒഴുകുന്നു. കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ 12 നദികൾ പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് ഒഴുകുന്ന ജില്ലയാണ് കാസർഗോഡ്. സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ നിരവധി നഗരങ്ങൾക്ക് കുടിവെള്ളം നൽകുന്ന ഏറ്റവും നീളം കൂടിയ നദിയാണ് പെരിയാർ.
