Job's book is an attempt to analyze and solve the complex problem of why the righteous should suffer. Job, God's faithful servant, was blessed with wealth and children. God allows Satan to tempt him. Job obeys God's will even when he loses his wealth and children. His body was full of sores. Even his wife rebuked him and asked him to curse God. Three friends - Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar - came to comfort Job. For the most part, the dialogue between them and Job is dramatically expressed in verse. Job and his friends talk about God's justice. They argue that Job suffered because of his own sin, which was the traditional way of thinking. Job is unable to comprehend God's justice in an attempt to prove his innocence. A new character, Elihu, appears. He justifies God's ways. Then God Himself answers Job. Job realizes his folly. The answer Job gets is incomplete. Job gets the answer that the goals of God, the Sovereign of the universe, are beyond human comprehension. The patience of the righteous is to test his faith. There are no clear ideas about the afterlife or the resurrection. Job shines as a model of faithfulness and good living in God. Job remained steadfast despite severe temptations. No information on the author is available. The book is believed to have been written between the 7th and 5th centuries.
