Do you think that an employee can function well just by mere pressure? Can he perform well when he is motivated by himself? This is where the concept of intrinsic motivation applies. What is intrinsic motivation and why is it important? Intrinsic motivation comes from inside you; it's when you're motivated to do something because it's internally rewarding. In other words, it's giving you a positive emotional return, perhaps because it's fun or because it's something you take pride in. It gives you a sense of personal satisfaction. Why is intrinsic motivation sometimes bad? Intrinsic motivation may help somebody to achieve a result. But it doesn't help them to define what that result should be. An end goal is usually an extrinsic reward of some kind. Allowing somebody to work on a task that motivates them intrinsically may backfire if there's no extrinsic motivator in place.
