Indira Nehru Gandhi was a multifaceted lady whose leadership in India has had long-term consequences. She was sworn in as India's first female prime minister on January 24th, 1966; she was the only child of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and was born on November 19, 1917.She took over as Prime Minister after Lal Bahadur Shastri died suddenly in 1966.She nationalised 14 banks during her first stint as Prime Minister. After her father, she is India's second-longest-serving Prime Minister.She declared Emergency in 1975, after being convicted of an electoral offence and banished from politics for six years. She went to battle with Pakistan in support of the East Pakistan independence movement and conflict, which concluded in an Indian victory and the establishment of Bangladesh. Her Sikh bodyguards killed her in 1984, just months after she ordered the invasion of Amritsar's Harmandir Sahib to quell the Punjab insurgency.
