Influence of Persian in Indian Literature

Presentations | English

Have you ever thought about why some Indian languages, if not all, sound like Persian? How come an Indo-European language like Persian seems to have a major linguistic and literary influence on Indian languages as well as their literature? The Persian language used to be the Lingua Franca of many countries all over the world. During the Mughal reign in India, the Persian language has had significant impact on culture and education in India which made Persian the sole official language of India. In this time, Indian literature and even the speech of common people have been influenced by Persian language. Iranian poets and scholars were patronized by Mughal kings and thereby the impact of Persian culture and language is conspicuous on every aspect of intellectual and socio-cultural life of India. Almost all Indian languages, especially Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu and Hindi have been influenced by Persian so as to have borrowed sizable vocabulary from it. The Persian language was considered as the language of culture and science, before the British colonized India. The Persian language remained in its glory until it was replaced by English Language in India in 1832. Please see the presentation to know more about how deep Persian language has taken its root on Indian literature.
