A mushroom or toadstool is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus. It is typically produced above ground, on soil or on its food source. Even though mushrooms are classified as vegetables, technically they are not plants but they are part of the kingdom called fungi. Edible mushrooms are the fleshy and edible fruit bodies of several species of macrofungi. They are rich source of fibre, protein and antioxidants. They act as antibacterial, immune system enhancer and cholesterol lowering agent. It has unusually high levels of essential vitamins. They are also important sources of bioactive compounds. Due to these properties the extracts of mushrooms are used in dietary supplements and they are also used to promote human health. As it is high in antioxidants and vitamins, it is believed to have cancer fighting properties and it improves heart health.
