Fayol was an engineer who rose through the ranks of the Compagnie de Commentry-Fourchambault-Decazeville mining company in France near the end of the industrial revolution to become the company's manager. The struggling business thrived under his leadership. The 14 Principles of Management developed by Fayol identified the skills required for effective management. They provide tips that you can still use in your organisation, as well as inspiring much of today's management theory. Fayol also compiled a list of the five primary management functions, which correspond to the Principles.
