When your genes are harmed by a mutation, you develop a genetic disorder. Carrying the mutation does not always imply that you will develop a disease. There are numerous types of disorders, including single-gene, multifactorial, and chromosomal disorders. Each biological parent gives you half of your genes, and you may inherit a gene mutation from one or both of your parents. Sometimes genes change as a result of problems with the DNA (mutations). This can increase your chances of inheriting a genetic disorder. Some cause symptoms at birth, while others appear later in life.
