Gene therapy is an experimental form of treatment that uses gene transfer of genetic material into the cell of a patient to cure the disease. The idea is to modify the genetic information of the cell of the patient that is responsible for a disease, and then return that cell to normal conditions. Viral vectors are commonly used transferring genetic materials because of their capacity to enter the cell and deposit genetic material. The new gene usually contains a functioning gene to correct the effects of a disease-causing mutation. Gene therapy may be a promising treatment option for some genetic disease including muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis. Somatic gene therapy and Germline gene therapy are two different types of gene therapy based on the types of cell treated. Gene Augmentation therapy, Gene Inhibition therapy are different techniques for carrying out gene therapy.
