Gautama or Gotama, (Sanskrit) Siddhartha or Siddhattha is the founder of Buddhism, one of the world's main faiths and philosophical systems, as well as one of the major religions and philosophical systems of southern and eastern Asia. Buddha is one of many names given to a teacher who lived in northern India during the sixth and fourth centuries before the Common Era. The title buddha was used by a variety of religious organisations in ancient India and had a variety of meanings, but it came to be most closely linked with the Buddhist tradition and to imply an enlightened being, one who has awakened from the sleep of ignorance and attained freedom from suffering.
ബുദ്ധന്‍ ബുദ്ധന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ പേർ സിദ്ധാർത്ഥൻ എന്നായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അച്ഛൻ ശുദ്ധോദനനും, അമ്മ സുപ്രബുദ്ധന്റെ പുത്രി മായാദേവിയുമായിരുന്നു. അക്കാലത്ത്‌ നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന മതപരവും സാമൂഹികവുമായ ദുരാചാരങ്ങളേയും ഹിന്ദുസമുദായത്തിലെ ജാതി വ്യവസ്ഥയേയും അദ്ദേഹം കഠിനമായി എതിര്‍ത്തു. പരമമായ സത്യം കണ്ടെത്താനായി സിദ്ധാര്‍ത്ഥന്‍ കഠിനമായ ധ്യാനത്തില്‍ മുഴുകി. ഗയയിലെ ഒരു പൈപ്പൽ മരത്തിന്റെ ചുവട്ടില്‍ ധ്യാനനിമഗ്നായിരിക്കെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ജ്ഞാനോദയം ഉണ്ടായി.മനുഷ്യന്റെ സകല കഷ്ടപാടുകള്‍ക്കും കാരണം ആശയാണെന്നും ആശ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചാല്‍ മാത്രമേ ജീവിതത്തിലെ പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ പരിഹാരമാവുകയുള്ളൂ എന്നും വിശ്വസിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം പരിഹാരമായി അഷ്ടാംഗമാര്‍ഗ്ഗങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശിച്ചു.
