This is something which no one is sure about. There was a time when we wondered how the landline telephone works. Later codeless phones came and we talked roaming inside our home. Years later mobile phones were introduced. People started talking on phone when they are on move. And today, sitting in your living room you are talking to friends or relatives sitting in another country. You see each other and talk. What else we need in communication! Years back making a video call was unimaginable. Now we are not excited about it and it's a normal component of our daily life. There may be a technology in the future which enables "thought to thought" communication. Means your thought will be sent to someone's brain.
