Sardar Gauthu Lachanna was a freedom fighter, social reformer and politician. In appreciation of his bravery, efficiency and perseverance, the people gave him the title ‘Sardar’. After Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in India, it is only Gauthu Lachanna that received that honor. He, along with many national leaders like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Jayanti Dharma Teja and VV Giri, took part in the Indian independence struggle and went to jail several times. He had strongly opposed Prakasam Panthulu gari’s stand on prohibition. Lachanna, who was a minister in the cabinet of Prakasam Panthulu and Bejwada Gopalreddy, was responsible for the downfall of the Prakasam government.
