Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have been ruled by many dynasties over the millennia. Naturally, the various rulers have built many a fort for themselves. Many of these forts can be found even today, mostly in ruins. This multi-part series brings to you interesting information on these forts, including the names of the rulers who built them, their unique architecture, the wars fought there, and so on. Covered in this part is the Elagandal Fort located in the Karimnagar District of Telangana. The fort is built on the banks of the Maneru River. The place was once known as Velagandula. There are historical evidences that reveal that the fort was built by the Kakatiyas between 1083 AD and 1323 AD. The Musunuri Nayaks and the Racharla Padmanayaks further strengthened the fort. In later years, the Mughals, followed by the the Qutb Shahis and then the Hyderabad Nawabs had control over the fort.
