Floods can also occur in rivers when the flow rate exceeds the capacity of the river channel, particularly at bends or meanders in the waterway. Floods often cause damage to homes and businesses if they are in the natural flood plains of rivers. Flooding is simply the result of a powerful weather system, but certain human activities can exacerbate the chances of flooding and make it worse when it occurs. Urban development, agriculture, and deforestation require careful management to keep such natural disasters from occurring. Causes of floods include hurricanes, broken levees or dams, rapidly thawing snow, and heavy slow-moving rain or repeated rains. A flood can happen in a few minutes, hours, days, or weeks. No matter how quickly it happens or the cause, flooding is deadly. Floods kill more people and cause more damage than other severe weather-related events. Floods have large social consequences for communities and individuals. The immediate impacts of flooding include loss of human life, damage to property, destruction of crops, loss of livestock, and deterioration of health conditions owing to waterborne diseases.
