Airline pilots perform a very stressful job throughout their working life. The irregular hours, crossing of multiple timne zones on long international flights and sometimes multiple take offs and landings in a period of a few hours all lead to increased stress and strain for the pilots. And with the toughest phase of a flight coming at the end during the time of landing, it is a necessity that pilots operating the flight are as alert at the end of their flight duty as they are at the start. Simply put, there is no margin for error! Flight Time and Flight Duty Time Limitations, together commonly referred as FDTL goes a long way in addressing the issue of Pilot Fatigue. Almost all countries including India have very strict regulations on the subject of FDTL. This presentation gives an introduction to the topic and looks at some of the applicable regulations in India. An airline accident in USA which was partly attributed to pilot fatigue is also discussed briefly.
