Fiction - Novel - The Legends of Khasak

Presentations | English

The Legends of Khasak is a major turning point in Malayalam literature. 'Khasakinte Ithihaasam' was the title of O. V. Vijayan's Malayalam novel The Legends of Khasak. The author himself translated it into English. The book creates contrasts between the modern world and tradition, as well as foreigners mixing with village residents. It investigates the characteristics of a marginalised society. Khasak is depicted as a town that welcomes newcomers while also releasing them with ease. The deep pictures of nature, archaic folk rituals, evocations of caste divisions, and the complex play of languages abound throughout 'The Legends of Khasak.' Vijayan portrays the wisdom and virtues of a tiny community. Despite the characters' poverty, lack of education, lifestyle, and beliefs being substantially different from those of Western readers, readers can identify with them.
