The Book of Ezra does not give a specific name to its author. Yet the prophet Ezra is believed to have written the book. The book begins at the end of Chronicles 2. Ezra and Nehemiah (the next book of the Bible) were initially thought of as two parts of a book. The theme of this book is the return of the Jews to Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity. There are two stages in the narration of the book. The first phase talks about the first group of exiles returned to Jerusalem in the first year of Cyrus the Great (BC 537) and the completion and dedication of the new synagogue in Jerusalem (BC 516). The subject of the second phase is the return of the second group of exiles under the leadership of Ezra, and his attempt to free and sanctify the Jews from the sin of intermarriage with non-Jews. The book of Ezra also refers to other biblical prophets, namely Haggai and Zacharias, whose messages prompted the people to complete the construction of the temple (Ezra 5:1). The book shows the power of God in the covenant faithfulness and motivates even the Gentile kings to fulfill the purposes of his redemption.
എബ്രായ ബൈബിളിലേയും ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളുടെ പഴയനിയമത്തിലേയും ഒരു ഗ്രന്ഥമാണ് എസ്രായുടെ പുസ്തകം എന്ന പേരില്‍ അറിയപെടുത്. ഇതിന്റെ ആദിരൂപം, തുടര്‍ന്നു വരുന്ന നെഹമിയായുടെ പുസ്തകവുമായി ചേര്‍ന്ന്, എസ്രാ-നെഹമിയാ എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു. ഈ ഇരട്ടഗ്രന്ഥം വേര്‍തിരിക്കപ്പെട്ടത് ക്രിസ്തുവര്‍ഷത്തിലെ ആദ്യനൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളിലെന്നോ ആണെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ബാബിലോണിലെ യഹൂദരുടെ മടക്കമാണ് ഇതിലെ പ്രധാനവിഷയം. പ്രവാസത്തിനൊടുവിലാണ് യെരുഷമിലേക്ക് യഹൂദര്‍ മടക്കയാത്ര ചെയ്യുന്നത്. അതിലെ ആഖ്യാനത്തില്‍ രണ്ടു ഘട്ടങ്ങലാണ് കാണാനാവുക. പേര്‍ഷ്യന്‍ രാജാവായ സൈറസിന്റെ വാഴ്ചയുടെ ആദ്യവര്‍ഷമായ ക്രി.മു. 538-ല്‍ പ്രവാസികളുടെ ആദ്യഗണത്തിന്റെ യെരുശലേമിലേക്കുള്ള മടക്കവും, ഓം ദാരിയസ് രാജാവിന്റെ വാഴ്ചയുടെ ആറാം വര്‍ഷമായ ക്രി.മു. 515-ല്‍ യഹൂദരുടെ പുതിയ പൂര്‍ത്തികരണം കഴിഞ്ഞ ദേവാലയത്തിന്റെ സമര്‍പ്പണവുമാണ് അദ്യഘട്ടത്തിലൂടെ കാണാന്‍ സാധിക്കുന്നത്. ജനനേതാവായ എസ്രാ യെരുശലേമില്‍ മടങ്ങിയെത്തുന്നതാണ് രണ്ടാംഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ വിഷയം. യഹൂദജനതയെ യഹൂദേതരരുമായുള്ള വിവാഹബന്ധങ്ങള്‍ പാപം ആയാണ് ആ കാലത്ത് കണക്കു കൂട്ടിയേക്കുന്നത്. അതു മൂലമുണ്ടായ പാപത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് മോചിപ്പിച്ച് വിശുദ്ധീകരിക്കാനുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശ്രമവുമാണ് ഇതിന്റെ ഉള്ളടകത്തില്‍ ഉള്‍പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.
