The seven-and-a-half golden elephants known as Ezhara Ponnana are maintained in the temple vault and brought out once a year for viewing by worshippers. The eight statuettes, seven of which are two feet tall and the eighth of which is half that height, are known as Ezhara seven-and-a-half Ponnana. The golden elephant has a long and illustrious history. It was given to the temple by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the founder of the Travancore empire, according to mythology. According to another account, while Marthanda Varma had promised to present the ponnana, the offering was made during Maharaja Karthika Thirunal's reign.
ഏഴര പൊന്നാന എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഏഴര സ്വർണ്ണ ആനകളെ ക്ഷേത്ര നിലവറയിൽ പരിപാലിക്കുകയും വർഷത്തിലൊരിക്കൽ ആരാധകർക്ക് ദർശനത്തിനായി പുറത്തേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുവരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. രണ്ടടി ഉയരവും എട്ടാമത്തേതിന്റെ പകുതി ഉയരവുമുള്ള എട്ട് പ്രതിമകൾ ഏഴര ഏഴര പൊന്നാന എന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. സുവർണ്ണ ആനയ്ക്ക് ദീർഘവും പ്രസിദ്ധവുമായ ചരിത്രമുണ്ട്. തിരുവിതാംകൂർ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാപകനായ അനിഴം തിരുനാൾ മാർത്താണ്ഡ വർമ്മയാണ് ഇത് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് നൽകിയതെന്ന് പുരാണങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നു. മറ്റൊരു വിവരണമനുസരിച്ച്, മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മ പൊന്നാന സമർപ്പിക്കാമെന്ന് വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്തിരുന്നപ്പോൾ, കാർത്തികതിരുനാൾ മഹാരാജാവിന്റെ ഭരണകാലത്താണ് വഴിപാട് നടത്തിയത്.
