A phrase in English grammar is a group of two or more words that function as a meaningful unit within a sentence or clause. A phrase is commonly defined as a grammatical unit intermediate between a word and a clause. A phrase consists of a head (or headword) that determines the grammatical nature of the unit and one or more optional modifiers. Phrases may include other phrases within them. Noun phrases (such as a good friend), verb phrases (drives carefully), adjective phrases (very cold and dark), adverb phrases (quite slowly), and prepositional phrases are all common types of phrases (in first place).
