How do Drugs Affect Human Behavior? Behavior is the way a person or thing acts or reacts. Psychoactive drugs are drugs that affect the Central Nervous System, altering its regular activity. They cause changes in a person's mood, behavior, and awareness. This can lead to intoxication, which is often the main reason people choose to take psychoactive drugs. Many psychoactive drugs alter brain function, resulting in temporary changes in mood, perception, and behavior. These drugs may be used recreationally to intentionally alter one's consciousness, as entheogens for ritual or spiritual purposes, or as medication. Psychoactive substances can mimic the effects of neurotransmitters. Others interfere with normal brain function by blocking it, or by altering the way neurotransmitters are stored, released, and removed. The hindbrain is vital to staying alive because it controls breathing and wakefulness. Drugs affect a part of the brain known as the limbic system. This is the area responsible for processing our emotions. Drug-related changes to this area can contribute to depressed mood, mood swings, emotional outbursts, and persistent irritability.
