Dracula as a Gothic Text with reference to the essay Theorising the Gothic

Dracula by the Bram Stoker, have a large number of gothic elements and themes. Gothic genres was introduced by Walpole in "The Castle of Ottanto". Its still now visible in popular horror movies. In Dracula, the protagonist Jonathan arrives at the castle and feels suspense and fear covered in that ancestral castle. Unknown atmosphere works well with in a gothic novel. Creation of a gloom or mystery with hidden secrets is the nature of a gothic text. When we read about the 'stone stairs to the hall' it gives a claustrophobic feeling. Dungeons, underground passages, crypts and catacombs is used to provide a gothic effect for the book. Landscape explained like 'great jagged mountain' and 'sheer rock studded with mountain' is also a gothic invention. Phrases like 'chilled my heart' is a moment of fear and tension like being paralyzed in fear. Throughout the novel, there is gothic clichés mentioned like 'moonlight' or representing more importance to darkness.
