Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome. It is a chromosomal disorder that develops when a cell divides incorrectly and produces an extra copy of chromosome 21. It can have an impact on a person's cognitive functioning and physical development, lead to mild to moderate developmental abnormalities, and increase the risk of some health conditions. Trisomy 21, or having three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the normal two, occurs most frequently in people with Down syndrome. During the growth of the sperm cell or the egg cell, improper cell division results in this. There is currently no treatment for the lifelong condition known as Down syndrome.
