Are you aware that "Earthquakes" are natural disasters that destroy man-made structures and trigger other natural disasters like tsunamis, avalanches, and landslides? That is to say, man is one of the causes of the world's disasters. Due to its unique geo-climatic circumstances, India has historically been vulnerable to natural calamities. Around 60% of the landmass is vulnerable to earthquakes of varying magnitudes; over 40 million hectares are vulnerable to floods; roughly 8% of the total area is vulnerable to cyclones; and 68 percent of the landmass is vulnerable to drought. The Indian government has implemented a paradigm shift in disaster management during the last few years. The new strategy is based on the belief that development will not be sustainable unless catastrophe mitigation is factored into the process. Disaster management is a critical component of this country's policy structure, as calamities and disasters disproportionately affect the poor and underprivileged.
