Democracy means rule by the people. The word comes from the ancient Greek words 'demos' (the people) and 'kratos' (to rule). A democratic country has a system of government in which the people have the power to participate in decision-making. Democracy has certain key elements which make it the most preferred form of government today. These elements include participation, accountability, conflict resolution and concern for equality and justice. Democratic ideals represent various aspects of the broad idea of “government of the people, by the people and for the people.” Democratic governance, the term recently added to the vocabulary of politics, signifies more than what the two words signify separately. Democratic governance is a condition in which the promise of justice, liberty and equality is realized in a democratic political framework, where the government is sensitive to the people’s identities, aspirations and needs and where people feel secure and content. Let us explore the topic further in the Presentation.
