By definition defamation is the act of injuring someone’s character or reputation by false statements. Cases of defamation are only considered attacks on if they are made in a revengeful or bitter manner. Defamation is a term that encompasses both libel and slander. Libel is a term used to describe visual defamation; as in newspaper articles or misleading pictures. Slander describes defamation that you can hear, not see. It is mostly oral statements that tarnish someone’s reputation. t simply can be a statement that injures someone’s reputation. Defamation is a wrong done by a person to another’s reputation by words, written or spoken, sign or other visible representation. When you make a defamatory statement, you should know whether you’re committing libel or slander. Laws governing defamation cases aim to compensate those whose character has been damaged due to false or malicious statements. A defamation example would be if a customer accused the restaurant owner of food poisoning even though it was not actually the restaurant’s food that caused them to be ill.
