Dalits are people who belong to the lowest castes among the Hindu caste system, outside the varna system. They were previously considered untouchables or avarnas. A practice though made unlawful by the constitution, continues to be practiced even today. The term Dalit was first used to describe people from this community in the early 19th century by reformist Mahatma Jotiba Phule. Karnataka has a revolutionary history of Dalit movement starting in the late 70s. Especially the movement spearheaded by Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) The movement also drew inspiration from Sharanas of the 12th century that stood against caste supremacy. The movement also gave birth to a new vein go literature known as dalit literature that continues to thrive even today. Here is a brief history of Dalit movement in Karnataka.
