Connection Between Gut Bacteria and Anxiety

A review of research published today in the journal General Psychiatry shows that people with anxiety symptoms may benefit from taking efforts to control the bacteria in their stomach by eating probiotic and non-probiotic foods and supplements. Anxiety symptoms are prevalent in persons suffering from mental illnesses and a range of physical ailments, particularly those linked to stress. According to previous research, up to a third of people will have anxiety symptoms at some point in their lives. The gut microbiota – the billions of bacteria that live in the gut and play a crucial role in the immune system and metabolism by supplying critical inflammatory mediators, minerals, and vitamins – is increasingly being shown to assist control brain function via the gut-brain axis.
