Everything in the universe is made up of matter and energy. Anything that occupies space and has mass (weight), can undergo physical and chemical changes. There are four fundamental states of matter: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. While energy is mass less and does not take up space and can only be measured by its effects on matter. It is the ability to do work or to put matter into motion. Energy and matter can change forms but cannot be created or destroyed. Energy and matter are often cycled within a system and different forms of matter and energy can interact. There are two main types of energy: potential and kinetic. Potential energy is energy that is stored, while kinetic energy is energy in use. Matter is conserved because atoms are conserved in physical and chemical process, but energy may take different forms. Within a natural system, the transfer of energy drives the motion or cycling the matter.
