Food is an essential part for living organisms. We are dependent mainly on plants for our food. It provides us with energy for good health and growth. Nutrients are ingredients of food namely carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Carbohydrates and fats are energy providing while proteins is body building. Vitamins and minerals are protective foods. Foods that are rich in carbohydrates are potato, rice, wheat, bread, sugar and milk. Processed foods like pizza, jams, burgers, noodles are carbohydrate source. Fats produce more energy than carbohydrates mainly seen in milk products, vegetable oils, nuts, milk and animal fat. Proteins help in growth and repair of body tissues and help the body in fighting against diseases. Minerals are required in very small quantities whose rich sources are milk, pulses, green leafy vegetables, meat and eggs. Minerals that are essential for our body are iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iodine, fluorine, sodium, potassium etc. Vitamins are important for proper functioning, that is Vit A, Vit B complex, Vit C, Vit D and Vit K.
